Mission and Programs

VOICE is a campus-wide initiative to end sexual violence in the Georgia Tech community through cultural and institutional change.

A campus-wide initiative...

VOICE involves students, faculty, and staff from every corner of the campus community: Health Services, Housing, Greek Life, the Counseling Center, the Women's Resource Center, the Dean of Students, Student Government, the Police Department, the Athletic Association, and others.

...to end sexual violence

Sexual violence exists as a continuum from harassment to unwanted sexual touching to forcible rape, and is pervasive in this society. Sexual violence at Tech creates a climate of insecurity and distrust- especially for women. VOICE is focused on reducing and eventually ending this violence.

...through cultural and institutional change.

On and off college campuses, most victims of sexual violence are women or children- and most perpetrators of this violence are men (whether spouse, date, acquaintance, or stranger). As a predominantly male campus, the Tech community faces particular challenges and opportunities. Effective institutional responses to the needs of victims of this violence are much needed. Men at Georgia Tech can play a key role in making change by confronting the issue with courage, honesty, and commitment.

Through prevention, advocacy, and educational programs, VOICE empowers men and women throughout campus, personally and collectively. This initiative includes:

1. A coordinated campus-wide violence prevention program:
  • intensive educational programs for men
  • a general awareness program for all students
  • staff and faculty training
  • a campus-wide media campaign
2. Response, advocacy, and treatment services for students who have been victims of sexual violence:
  • strengthening of the Sexual Violence Task Force
  • a peer and staff advocate program
  • staff and faculty training
  • improving judicial and law enforcement responses
