Intimate Partner Violence Statistics

The information in this section deals with the incidence and prevalence of violent incidents that occur in relationships (though this term is used somewhat loosely).

As understood here, this term refers to physical and/or sexual violence committed within a pre-existing relationship-particularly intimate partner relationships. Some violence committed by strangers is also included.

Intimate Partner Violence

From the National Violence Against Women Survey (Tjaden and Thoennes, 2000 {www.ncjrs.org/pdffiles1/nij/183781/pdf}):

  • 25% of women and 8% of men have been raped and/or physically assaulted by a current or former spouse, cohabitating partner, or date, in their lifetime.
  • An estimated 1.8 million incidents of rape, physical assault, or stalking are committed by an intimate partner against women, each year in the United States.
  • Of all the intimate partner rapes or physical assaults, 93% are committed against women.
  • 54% of female victims were under the age of 18 when they were first raped and 83% of female victims were under the age of 25.
  • Of all intimate partner rapes or attempted rapes,1 out of 10 are committed against a man (3% of men report surviving rape or attempted rape as a child or adult).
  • 11.4% of same-sex cohabitating women, and 15% of same-sex cohabitating men, report being raped, physically assaulted and/or stalked by their partners.
