Student Advisory Board
As a student, you are in a unique position to be part of the heart of VOICE. The advisory board provides student leadership in the design and implementation of VOICE programs.
Participation in the board provides students with the opportunity to
develop and/or enhance a number of skills related to leadership, education,
program development, and social change. Members of the board will:
- Contribute
to the development and evaluation of violence prevention and advocacy
programs for women and men on campus;
- Participate in ongoing education within the group about sexual and
relationship violence and other issues of social justice;
- Assist in the recruitment, selection, and training of peer educators
and advocates;
- Contribute to the development and evaluation of a campus-wide social marketing campaign;
- Organize student and other support to institutionalize the initiative;
- Represent
VOICE during public events and meetings;
- Work on other projects based on members’ interests and initiative.
The advisory board consists of 10-12 students who meet regularly (bi-monthly
or weekly, depending on need) with VOICE staff. Members commit
to be part of the board for at least a semester and preferably for
a full school year. Retreats and other events will be required for
the purpose of training and group-building.
A good candidate for the board:
The basic requirements are an interest in sexual violence and social justice and a sense of commitment. Extensive experience
and knowledge are not necessary. Because VOICE student advisors work with
issues that are often deeply personal and sometimes politically divisive,
it is important that they be able to work to resolve conflicts and differences
of opinion constructively. Qualified students have some combination
(not necessarily all) of the following:
- Interest in sexual and relationship
violence and other issues of social justice;
- Commitment to personal growth and social change (making a difference
in self and the world);
- Leadership skills;
- Ability to take care of themselves
emotionally;
- Good verbal, written, and other communication skills;
- Ability to challenge themselves and others – personally and professionally;
- Experience working collaboratively within a diverse group.
