Involved
VOICE involves students, faculty, and staff from every corner of the campus community: Health Services, Housing, Greek Life, the Counseling Center, the Women's Resource Center, the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Government Association (SGA), the Police Department, the Athletic Association, academic departments, and many others.
In addition to joining groups and organizations and participating in trainings, there are things in everyday life that you can personally do to make a difference. Below are six specific steps you can take to end sexual violence.
6 Steps You Can Take To End Sexual Violence
Educate yourself. Learn more about sexual violence and its effects on the campus community, your peers, and your relationships. Visiting this web site is a start. Attend trainings, workshops, discussions, seminars, and other events to increase your awareness and knowledge about this issue.
Make a personal commitment. Choose to pursue relationships based on mutual respect and consent. Practice non-violence in your personal life.
Be a model. Contribute to a climate of safety and respect simply through your words and actions. Be aware of stereotypes and analyze the messages you receive from society, the media, your peers, and other places.
Challenge others. Firmly but constructively challenge language, behaviors and visual images that promote violence or disrespect. This may require you to step out of your comfort zone, but it is a positive step towards changing campus culture.
Have a plan. Be there when someone needs you. Seek out information to better understand what survivors of sexual violence experience – and the options available to them. In 2 out of 3 incidents of sexual violence the survivor tells someone, usually a friend. You could be that friend.
Get Involved . Invite and support programs and events on campus that address the problem. There are several places you can get involved as a student, staff, or faculty member. Read on to find out what these options are!
